Malton Points Program:

This program will keep track of students extra-curricular and academic achievements.  It will award points depending on the maximum number of hours, minimum points granted, and max obtainable points.  If a student has sufficient points, he/she will be given a award.  The program will track the number of awards a person achieves to ensure that no student receives more awards than he/she is entitled to.

Why would I need such a program?

Handing out awards based on activities such as Intramural floor hockey or Junior girls basketball is an excellent way of encouraging students to join the activities.  Awarding students on academic standing, or for participating in Champ or Descartes or Chess Club, is an excellent way of encouraging students to aim high academically.  Malton points program takes care of tracking these points for you.

How does this program work?

There is one server location at which the data files are stored.  Just run the setupServer.exe to set this up.  On every client computer, you run the program setupClient.exe to install the client program.  It's that simple!  When you're ready to buy, we'll send you a license file that'll give you unlimited program usage for your school!

The client communicates with the server when information is to be updated.  It checks constantly for up to date data to ensure that all information is kept track of.  A file locking system is in place to ensure the security of your data files during transactions.

Has any school acquired this program yet?

This program was created to meet the demands of Lincoln M. Alexander Secondary School's principal Jerry Powidajko.  The method of assigning points to programs was based on min points, max points, hours of commitment, and duration.

Example:

Activity Name Min points Max Points Hours of Commitment Duration
Floor Hockey 10 20 20 1 semester
Senior Boys Basketball 20 40 80 1 year

Suppose John Jacob had attended 10 hours of floor hockey.  He'd be given 10+10/(20-10)=15 points

What are some of the more advanced properties of this program?

As your software is being produced by us, we will come to you with a prototype with features that have been implemented as of date.  We will come with suggested additional features, and will note any changes or additions you want in the program.  When we did this for Lincoln Alexander Secondary School, we ended up with seven different prototypes before the version 1.0 product!  This is our version 1.1, our 8th release, so you can expect it to have been thoroughly tested for bugs and errors and packed with features.

Advanced Features Include:

You will also be able to give us feedback so that we can improve on the program even more for future releases!

Step by Step Installation and Initial Setup Instructions!!

  1. Run the setupServer file and setup the server on a drive location that is accessible by all computers.  Remember to note the server location (e.g. "U:\server").  If you have a license setup file, you may run it now at the server location to remove the program limitations.  If not, once you get the license installation file, you only need to run it once on any computer where the server is accessible.

  2. Run the setupClient on all computers that will be running the program.  Once complete, a prompt will appear asking for the server location.  Enter the location you noted above.

  3. Run the client.  The default initial admin login is "admin" and password is also "admin".  It is recommended that this password be changed immediately in admin mode.

  4. Add some groups:  To do this, enter admin mode, select "add/remove users/groups," and click "perform action."  Now, enter the groups one by one.  It is recommended that you enter a year following the group name, e.g. "Floor hockey 04."  You must also enter details such as total hours to achieve max points, min points, duration (semester, etc.), and comments, etc. as well as a username and password for each group.

  5. Now add students.  You may add them one by one using "add/remove student" and entering their details, or enter a list of students using "parse student list."  With parse student list, you must supply a list of student names and the order that their first, last, and id appear.  You must also indicate the separator (e.g. comma, semi-colon, etc. <avoid using spaces as separator>) and if you want to remove all not on this list, or merge the students in the list to the master list.

That's it, you may begin using the program now!

Use the program as explained in the manual.  Basically, add/remove students from groups using edit mode, and view progress in view mode.  Use admin mode to hand out awards, add new students, add new groups, etc.
